What’s your philosophy?

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011 by Nicola Marshall

You meet so many people who have a philosophy about life.  They may not say it and certainly not in the first meeting, but you can see it in how they are, what comes across about them, the things they say and what they are interested in.  You may not agree with their philosophy but you have to acknowledge it’s all individual and unique.  Like many things about people, it’s the understanding of each other – what makes us different and what makes us the same that is fascinating.

Without relationships and difference in people the world would be a boring place.  I know many people believe animals to be a safer bet when it comes to relationships, and their feeling may be that an animal is more loyal, trustworthy and a better companion than a lot of people – that may be true.  BUT I do hope today that when you meet people for the first time, or maybe a life long friend – you will see the beauty in them – the moments of loyalty, trustworthiness and companionship, and that the diversity you see will only enhance the wonder of what makes us human.
So what is your philosophy?  Well as much of my musing comes from the media – this subject is no exception and I’ve just started watching a great detective programme – Criminal Minds.  In one of these episodes I came across one of my philosophies in life, when thinking about how my life may be sometimes and the things that happen:

“this isn’t what I want but I will take the high road.  Maybe it’s because I look at everything as a lesson or because I don’t want to walk around angry.  Or maybe it’s because I finally understand there are things we don’t want to happen but have to accept, things we don’t want to know but have to learn, and people we can’t live without but have to let go!”

I don’t want to regret anything in my life and certainly don’t want to walk round with anger and disappointment.  If my life on earth stopped tonight there would still be things I’d have liked to have done, but I know I’ve always been open to learn and experience everything that’s come my way and I’m happy with my life.
Someone else I’ve come across recently – a guy called Brendon Burchard (take a look at his stuff it’s amazing) says there are three questions we ask at the end of our life:
1)    Did I live?
2)    Did I love?
3)    Did I matter?
Today think about your philosophy on life – does it compel you to greatness or is it dragging you down?  You can change it?  Each day you can say I will live today, I will love today and I will do something that makes a difference to someone else.

What a perfect moment?

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010 by Nicola Marshall

It’s those special one off moments that seem to make this life so great. The snow has fallen and the seconds of fun playing snowballs until you start to get cold are ace. If you could say what your day has been like so far what would it be? You may say awful from start to finish, or amazing from start to finish but I bet more often than not it’s moments of greatness and moments of awfulness.

Of course there are some periods in our life when it all seems disastrous. When a loved one is ill and even though there are glimpses of normality and even laughter, overall, the overriding feeling is of despair. The same can be said of those special, celebration times. Overriding feelings of being glad to be alive but then some bad news from someone, or a friend says something in an ‘off’ way to us and we’re down in the depths again.

I wonder if we were made for this kind of roller coaster ride? Do you think it was the intention for life to be so up and down? Whatever your beliefs, were we meant to just ride the waves – whatever life throws at us, or are we supposed to do something else? What could that be, I hear you cry? Do we have a choose or does life just happen to us – like we’re watching our own life on TV – with no control and no say in the outcome?

Interesting thought eh? If you could write your own TV programme about your life right now what would it be?

There’s a very cheesy saying on a card I sent recently – and I love it – ‘There’s no such thing in anyone’s life as an unimportant day”. I would like to take that a step further and say there’s no moment in anyone’s life that is unimportant! The few precious moments you have watching your kids laugh and be uninhibited in their play, the glimpse of relief for someone in real pain, the second of quietness in a noisy day. They are all to be treasured.

‘Love the Moment. Flowers grow out of dark moments. Therefore, each moment is vital. It affects the whole. Life is a succession of such moments and to live each, is to succeed’ ~Cortia Kent.

What a brilliant quote – so I leave you on that note today – notice the special moments in each day – there will be thousands and they all make up the sum of your life – wouldn’t it be great to actually take part in your own life instead of letting it happen to you. Take a closer look and you might just be surprised at how amazing your life is.

Great song and video that talks of those moments that make up our lives – click the image to play.
